Artist Statement
Using oil paint, graphite, ink, and alternative photography methods, my work explores cycles of growth and decay, personal transformation, and memory. Images of trees and roots across mediums depict the importance of nutrient cycles in nature and reflect how personal histories shape us as people. My practice is influenced by an interest in ecology and movements like Expressionism, Surrealism, and alternative photography. Through an exploration of the materiality of painting, drawing, and photography, my work sits within a contemporary art movement which uses the formal qualities of material to examine a growing concern with the roles people play in their communities and ecological surroundings.
I spent July 2025 studying abroad on the West Coast of Ireland at the Burren College of Art. An exposure to natural landscapes, old ruins, and careful regard towards ecological health sparked an interest in how both nature and people record time and further shaped how I employ imagery from nature to reflect on human experiences. My work deals with the fluidity of our perceptions, memory, and sense of self, and how these inner experiences are shaped by a greater context. The use of cyanotypes, abstract textures, symbolism, and transparent materials like fabric and acetate convey the ephemerality of these themes. By blending unpredictable photographic methods with more deliberate mark making and imagery, my work also explores the balance between intuition and intentionality in art making.
